The new 2013 Mercedes Benz S63 AMG

AMG Lightweight Performance: up to 100 kg lighter than before
Systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy reduces the weight of the S63 AMG by up to 100 kilograms compared to the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite brake system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminium. Installing a spare wheel recess made of carbon fibre, a material used in Formula 1, reduces the weight by a further four kilograms. The S63 AMG also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 3.49 kg/hp, resulting in effortlessly superior performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.0 to 4.4 seconds, depending on model variant, and the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).
In terms of maximum output and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series-produced V8 engine of all. With an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and a torque of 900 Nm, the AMG eight-cylinder unit from the BlueDIRECT engine family (in-house designation M 157) outperforms all comparable engines. The fuel consumption of the new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres lower than that of the predecessor model, even though the engine output has been increased by up to 30 kW (41 hp). The range-topping eight-cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is due to come into force in 2015.
Technical highlights of the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine:
  • Direct petrol injection with piezo injectors
  • Biturbocharging
  • All-aluminium crankcase
  • Four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment
  • Air-to-water intercooler
  • Efficient cooling of engine oil, engine water and transmission oil
  • Lightweight composite oil pan
  • Alternator management
  • ECO start/stop function
AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps
The AMG sports exhaust system in the S63 AMG has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in "C" (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine's sound is more understated - perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.

2013 Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG-S

Performance update for the CLS63 AMG: along with the new E63 AMG, the latest model upgrade also benefits the CLS63 AMG in its Coupé and Shooting Brake variants. The S-Model variant of the CLS63 AMG not only boasts the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive but also comes with the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine generating a maximum output of 430 kW (585 hp) and up to 800 Nm of torque. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine continues to be the absolute pinnacle of efficiency: the combination of high performance and low fuel consumption remains unrivalled by any other competitor in the segment worldwide. The rear-wheel-drive variant rated at 410 kW (557 hp) and generating 720 Nm of torque is optionally available with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
Mercedes-AMG is also premiering high-performance passenger car models with an all-wheel-drive system geared to driving dynamics. This offers customers even greater scope for individuality and an even broader choice of models. Alongside the successful SUVs - ML63 AMG, GL63 AMG, G63 AMG and G65 AMG - two passenger car model ranges comprising up to eight unique models with all-wheel drive are now available from Mercedes-AMG in the guise of the E63 AMG and the CLS63 AMG. Additional models featuring performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, such as the A45 AMG and the CLA45 AMG, will follow in 2013.

2013 Nissan GTR

Considered by many to be the perfect "street-able" supercar at its launch, the team behind the creation of the Nissan GT-R has never slowed down. The relentless ongoing development of the GT-R has been driven by the fact that the GT-R competes in a rarified supercar segment against vehicles costing more than twice as much - and where bragging rights can be won or lost by mere fractions of a second. The new 2014 Nissan GT-R continues the tradition. Set to go on sale at select certified dealerships in the United States in January 2013, the latest iteration of the GT-R is another step forward in the effort to deliver passion and emotion to customers through "extreme development."
Much of that development has taken place on the world's most challenging racing circuits, including the famed Nurburgring where the Nissan GT-R set production car lap records in both 2008 and 2009. The most grueling of these ongoing track tests was staged in May 2012 with the entry of an essentially stock Nissan GT-R in the Nurburgring 24 Hour sports car endurance race, where it finished 1st in class and 30th overall. More than just a test of the Nissan GT-R's durability and reliability under the most extreme conditions, the around-the-clock race was also a development trial for key GT-R senior engineering staff members that were involved in every stage of the project from vehicle prep to pit stops to post-race teardown and analysis. The experience is expected to have a long-ranging impact on the growth of the GT-R and the core development team.
